9 screen trading set up - perfect for a home trader

Hi

I traded futures from 2004 until a few months ago. Last couple of those years were spent trading from home. I have moved on to a new role as a commodity trader which does not require the need for working from home and so many screens.

Anyway what I am selling is a 9 screen set up. I have a couple of trading computers and one operated 7 screens for trading which i used to do using TT package. The other computer ran two screens for internet browsing etc.

would also include all the brackets etc - everything except for the desk. i used to run 4 screens on the bottom including 2 x 32" screens and 5 x screens above , the rest were mainly 22"/24" Samsung Syncemaster screens

I can provide a full run down of the spec of the computers , screens etc , photos

I am based in UK / Ireland so this gear is not going to be cheap to send to far flung destinations but happy to discuss etc

Fat cat pay. Is it obscene ?

Sir Martin Sorrell, the longstanding chief executive of advertising company WPP, received £70.4m in cash and shares last year in one of the biggest pay deals in UK corporate history.

Estimates of his 2015 pay deal have been made since the disclosure last month that Sorrell received nearly £63m in share awards. The advertising company’s annual report on Friday showed that a £4.2m annual bonus and other payments had pushed the total to £70.4m.


“While the value of Sir Martin Sorrell’s award is very large, it was the result of an outstanding set of returns to share owners,” said Sir John Hood, chairman of the WPP compensation committee.


Sorrell’s pay deal – which means he has received £190m since 2009 – is being announced at a time of renewed shareholder focus on executive pay, with two FTSE 100 firms – BP and Smith & Nephew – receiving “no” votes for the pay deals.

His figure for 2015 includes a £47,000 allowance for accommodation when he stays in his own home in New York.

Sorrell founded WPP in 1985 when he borrowed £250,000 to buy a stake in shopping basket maker Wire & Plastic Products. Through a series of acquisitions it is now the world’s biggest marketing and advertising group and an acquisitions machine, combining advertising agencies such as JWT and Ogilvy & Mather with PR companies.

GBP/JPY short term sell

GBPJPY is currently trading in oversold levels (as RSI indicates), which inclines us to believe that a recovery is due. Price has breached through Bollinger Bands, and from what we have observed in the markets, price tends to retrace back or consolidate until it gets positioned inside bollinger bands.

156.7 is the level we are waiting for in order to short GBPJPY and we are aiming for 50 pips and this target is expected to be met in the short term (within hours or up to one day).

We need to see how prices will react around our entry as that is an important level (historical resistance). If any 1h candlestick closes above that level (156.7), that is a negative sign, and the short position should be covered immediately as a close above that level will empower bulls and possibly take price up to 157 and higher levels.

Surfing the 100 waves!

Here goes with my first trade then!

All my trades are on the S and P 500.
I have placed a buy trade of £10 at 2075.5
My stop loss is 2073.5 giving a risk of 2 pips.
I have already moved my stop up a little , the reason being it bouced off 2074.7 and my RSI indicator came back up through the 30 heading northound after a double dip.
I'm never sure about moving stops up and have been caught out a few times when it goes through the stop then down a couple of points and rebounds.
I also spotted a support level at 2075.1 on the 14th April which it bounced straight off and then again on the 25th April at 2077.2
This is where it gets difficult for me as I really stuggle with risk management.
Trade has gone up to 2078 and I could place a stop at my entry price and run it.
If I lose then I've lost nothing but theres a chance of a good gain. However if my entry price stop is hit and my previous stop was sound then I could be shooting myself in the foot. Any ideas?

After months of tinkering with spread betting I have decided to start this thread to try and keep myself in line and stick to my trading plan. If I lose the lot then it's goodbye to spread betting; as much as I enjoy it i'm not going to continue if i'm crap at it!

My aim is to trade 100 times and try and work out a percentage of loss/gain at the end. I have a starting pot of £5000 and will be trading only the SandP500 from 0800 UK Time until close of day / 2100 uk time.

With an average stop loss of 3-5 pips at £10 a pip this should keep me in the 1% zone of risk management.

At the end of each day I will update my thread with any results of my trading and promise to be 100% honest.

I have not borrowed any money to do this, it is all my own hard earned cash and my risk to take. I would rather not lose the lot but if i do so be it. You only live once:twisted:

I'm currently thinking about working on a service that would deliver news about upcoming potential mergers and acquisitions. How to deal with huge announcement/news-swings

Hi everyone,

My first post here, so excuse me if this has been answered before. I have made an attempt to find the answer to my question but haven't been able to do so.

I'm currently running an expert advisor I built myself on a few demo accounts (with different parameters) as well as on one live account. I have been running this particular EA for the better part of the past 9-10 months or so with positive results so far. It trades EURUSD and GBPUSD on the 1H charts mainly.

One area in which this EA does not perform well is when the market swings violently back and forth such as what happens after major announcements or news (e.g. today's FOMC statement). As it trades with a trailing stop-loss, this is what usually happens just after an announcement:

1. Stop out current trade with a loss
2. Enters a new trade in opposite direction
3. Trade #2 stops out due to continued swinging
4. And so on...

The EA is intelligent enough to set a wider stop-loss after each stop-out but this is usually not enough to prevent the subsequent stop-out. I've seen this hit 3 stop-outs rapidly after each other, and you can imagine what that does to the results...

I realise that I won't be able to prevent this behaviour fully, but I'd like to mitigate it. I was wondering if you would be able to share some tips on how to deal with anticipated high-vol situations such as news and announcements? I thought of the following alternatives:

• Simply exit the trade before an anticipated announcement and resume trading afterwards
• Massively widen stop-losses just before the announcement and re-tighten them afterwards
• Enter an equal and opposite trade to hedge the movement, ignore SL levels and then exit this hedge afterwards

What do you think? Which is more effective? Is there anything you suggest I should do instead?

NZD/USD has created a beautiful head and shoulders on the 4hr chart. However there will be high volatility and uncertainty in the market today, due to many important economic releases including FED’s interest rate decisions.
Considering the price action of these last days we believe that it is time for NZDUSD to retrace most of March’s rally as bears seem to have control for the moment with the SMA 20 having crossed SMA50 on the H4 and H1 chart. While Moving Averages are lagging indicators, we are using them as an indication of the overall trend.
A break of the neckline (0.6830 level) would open more space on the downside, however with the SMA 200 right below that level, NZDUSD might jump back as it is an important support. What we would like to see now is a recovery around 0.6920 levels and that would be the perfect level to short as the stop loss will be around 25 pips above that level.
The first target for this short is 0.6810. In the event that SMA 200 is breached and one H4 candlestick is closed below that, it would be a good sign for the short setup and we might ride NZDUSD down to 0.6750, and later on 0.6670 right above SMA 200 in the Daily chart.
In the event that NZDUSD does not jump back and reach our entry point but the neckline is breached immediately and at least one H1 candlestick is closed below 0.68250, we will enter short in market prices.
Stop Loss = 0.6950 TP1 = 0.6810*
TP2 = 0.6750 TP3 = 0.6670

How do you journal your trades?

I am referring to a trading journal as a record of all trading activity. I can see how trading journals help traders assess the overall performance of trading decisions and how effective specific trading strategies are. An options trader can learn from previous options trades, gain insights into what works and what does not, adapt and plan accordingly.

I've come across many options traders who are using Excel for journaling. They compile overall metrics like total gain/loss, successful vs. unsuccessful trades, expectancy and so on. I also read traders take screenshots of every trade entry and exit. However, all of this effort seems like a lot of manual labour and it leaves me wondering if there is a better way to do journaling? How do you do it?

Is it possible to do this?

I have read in more than one trading book that it is " a good idea to move your stop-loss to break-even as soon as the market moves your way."
This is discretionary, right? I mean, a few points, half ATR, ?? But that is another question.

Anyway, if we are not at the screen all day, but basically end of day trading, how can we do this? I could set an alarm when a price hits, but I may be at the day job.

Does any trading platform allow you to set a stop that, eg, might be 15 points away, and when your stock moves up 5 points, moves to break-even? As opposed to a trailing stop that will only move in ordered steps?

A higher lot on a small account or a smaller lot on a big account?

Which is better? The way I see it, if one's trading strategy is sound and robust, a higher drawdown percentage on a small account should be of no concern while a lot less cash is at risk with the same profit potential.

AUDUSD: Faces Corrective Weakness Risk

AUDUSD. The pair continues to hold on to its corrective pullback bias despite its present price hesitation. Except it returns above the 0.7834 level, we see further correction occurring. On the downside, support resides at the 0.7650 level where a breach will aim at the 0.7600 level. Below that level will set the stage for a run at the 0.7550 level with a cut through here targeting further downside pressure towards the 0.7500 level. On the upside, resistance lies at the 0.7750 level. A cut through here will turn attention to the 0.7800 level and then the 0.7850 level where a violation will set the stage for a retarget of the 0.7900 level. On the whole, AUDUSD remains biased to the downside on corrective pullback.

Trading brokers you use?

Hello my brothers of binary,

I have recently joined IG Index, using them as my training wheels because the platform seems to be simple to interact with. Although after some research on them I am a little wary. I have read the Trade2Win reviews on brokers, however some of these are old as 2004.

I will probably use IG Index until I gain some type of consistency, however I would know your thoughts on which brokers are good for beginners and which brokers are good overall regardless of your experience level.

Using percentages instead of pips

I've been looking around online for the past few days and just cannot find if its possible to use percentage movements instead of pip movements on automated trading in MT4, I'm sure it must be possible but cannot for the life of me find the software add-on needed

Why automation is a must

I used to scorn fully automated Forex EAs when I thought I had gained enough trading experience but even more trading experience has brought me to believe they are just about the only way to stay in the game.

The reasons for that is strategy stagnation. Just about every trading strategy (or a combination of strategies) which is profitable in the long run has fairly lengthy stagnation periods of up to half a year. Surely, someone who is not a professional trader working for a big corporate name cannot afford to stay flat for that long.

Therefore, they either quit for good and go back to their day jobs or lose patience, start experimenting, and stop following the strategy which leads to an imminent loss.

With an EA, after making sure it's coded right, you can set it up on a VPS and run it from there while doing your usual daily stuff and not missing on any trades. Needless to say, you also don't feel any stress or emotions which oftentimes leads you to things like reluctance to cut your losses, premature profit taking, or revenge trading.

Do you enjoy the very process of trading?

For one, I hate it. Placing trades, following them real-time, and closing them out for some reason really displeases me, evokes all sorts of undesired emotions, and creates a strong sense of improper time spending. If I had to choose between trading manually or quit trading for good, I would surely quit.

I do enjoy scrutinizing markets for their regularities but once I spot those, I refer to a coder's help for a fully automated EA which I could later run off my VPS as opposed to manual trading (with the historical data tests as a pleasant and useful bonus).

I truly believe more than half of all trading losses are not as much due to flawed trading strategies (or a lack thereof) as due to the emotional human responses, greed and fear being the main ones. Another one is impatience wherby traders withdraw or double down after a losing streak. The reasons for impatience are mostly desperation and/or a desire to get rich quick and somehow seeing trading as one real way to do it. Had they researched, they would know the trading super-profits are delivered by the exact opposite - the compounding effect over many months of small profits.

I've known some people who were desperate to the point they couldn't wait a month. One asked me for a showcase run of one of my bots, I agreed, then he told me it would be a no-go if the bot does not deliver super-profits in as soon as a month. He said he couldn't sustain himself financially if he doesn't have his high trading profits every single month (like if we had an identical market every month). The man later fell victim to some online con in his desperate quest for a holy grail and lost even that little he still had.

I am not advocating EAs here, a lot in trading is discretion-based and one often can't squeeze that into a code. Trading is just a lot more like science and research to me than a source of income or gambling.

newbie question here, I’ve been searching around for a while, I'm based in the UK

wanted to know if any UK stockbroker website has its own platform, not a web based interface, something like Das trader pro, which I really like.

I’ve currently joined with TD direct investing, although I like the web interface I would like to download a platform, as I find its execution is more quicker and frankly I just prefer it be honest, hopefully not being too fussy. :o

Where can I find OBV data?

I’m a relative novice to technical investing, and having read a few articles on the subject, it would seem that one of the best leading indicators would appear to be on balance volume. However, although most of the (free) technical analysis sites I’ve come across show the OBV graph, they do not appear to hold the OBV data upon which the graph is based.

Does anyone know if there are any sites out there – free or otherwise – which has easily accessible OBV data for any given share?

Otherwise – I might have to try converting the graphs to data somehow – again, can anyone recommend any conversion tools for this?

Generally speaking, do people agree that OBV is one of the best leading indicators? If not, does anyone have views as to any leading indicators they consider to be more reliable than OBV?

If you've been trading profitably for over a year, lets say with with strict discipline, and of course, also with good entry and money management, is it possible for those people to remain forever profitable as long as they maintain the same discipline? I hear some people say the markets change that leads to someone unable to maintain profitability over the long run. GBM source code in C for generating time-series

Here is some source code I wrote a while ago for generating time series (ie. stock prices) using Geom. Brownian Motion (GBM).
GBM is not random data, it is simulated market data (some call it "synthetic market data").
Where can you get say 5-second bar data for hundreds of stocks for say 1000 years?
With GBM it is possible to test 1000s of market situations fast and with no costs.
It is very good for market modelling and forwardtesting in simulations.
And: you even don't need to store the mass data in databases; just store the "seed number" which is just a single 32bit or 64bit value depending on the operating system.
Ie. in the below code one would at program start in main() do something like this:

It means that you can replay/repeat the same sequence it generates. This is important during system design and development (ie. for debugging the system).

  The quality of the generated data can be verified with the following formula:
    ObservedAnnualVolaPct = BarVolaPct * sqrt(252 * nBarsPerDay)
  ie. in Excel/LibreOffice-Calc for the sample data the pgm creates do this:
    =STDEV(D2:D16381)*100*SQRT(252*780)
  It should give approximately the same VolaPct as was specified as the input volatility (ie. here 30).
 
Misc:
  - You can modify the code easily to create OHLC-data (intraday and EOD) to be used in trading platforms like AmiBroker etc.
  - It works with trading days instead of calendar days, and a year is defined as 252 trading days (can be chgd in ctor)

Day trading isn't really possible for me with my work schedule so should I try out swing trading? I think what would work best for me would be to do research on the weekends and find positions to hold for a day or 2, if not longer, throughout the week. I'm not really too familiar with swing trading strategies. What are good parameters to run in a scan to find possible companies/positions? Really any advice is appreciated. Thanks.

Trade2Win Am I wasting my time? 'Tinder for Finance' app?

At the moment I have created a 'Tinder for Stocks' http://ift.tt/1S8XPpG. I am thinking of extending the app for Forex picks and adding some new features.

What problem am I solving? At the moment there are Forex plays all around the web. For example from BabyPips and other websites. Imagine if a lot of these ideas could be found in one central place and at the same time they are presented to you in a Tinder format (500 characters max).

e.g a Forex idea in note form and then if you like the idea you can click a 'read more' icon to see the full play on that forex website.

The other feature I want to add is a search database.

Imagine if you could search by:
-Currency Paid (e.g. USD/GBP)
-Search by Direction (e.g. Long or Short)
-Search by Analysis (e.g. Fundamental Analysis/Technical Analysis or Both)

e.g you could enter $USD/GBP, LONG, Technical Analysis and the app would search all the ideas posted for that certain criteria. Then you would be able to see plays from Forex analysis sites in a swipable format.

Am I creating something useful here for the Trade2Win users or am I wasting my time?

AN OPTIONS SELLING SYSTEM THAT THEORETICALLY ALWAYS WINS THE FULL CREDIT

First things first: the legal stuff:
  To be on the safe side, I as the author of these free systems make these statements:
  1) The systems are the result of academic research.
  2) The systems have not been tested yet in the real market.
  3) Use the systems at your own risk. Test it first throughly in simulations and/or backtestings/forwardtestings.


Intro:
  - This is an options selling system with a special hedging mechanism (called "entry-level hedging").
  - A classic static or dynamic zero-delta-hedging is not used with these systems.
  - One needs a near-24/7 market with ideally no overnight gaps in the underlying stock price.
    Such a market can be emulated by using multiple markets around the globe where the stock trades.
  - The hedging mechanism requires that the stock position gets monitored continuously.
  - If applied correctly in the market, then it is a zero-risk system.
  - It can be used for all options regardless of the option style (American or European).
  - PnL is dependent on the ATM premium: the higher the ATM premium the higher the PnL.
  - The basic system uses a short Call (can also be a short Put, but then hedging rules have to be reversed).
  - The combo-system (sys15) uses a short Call and a short Put together (but uses just one stock position for both!).
  - The example uses a 40% volatile stock; then the PnL is about 201% p.a. for sys14 and 658% p.a. for sys15.
  - It is the special hedging mechanism that makes it all possible.


Beware:
  - The example below uses for simplicity just the minimum 1 contract,
    but in practice one would need a PDT-account with at least $25k.
  - When testing this system use a cheap stock commission rate like that of the broker IB ($0.005 per share, minimum $1).


Rules of the options selling system sys14 with "entry-level hedging":
  1) The system consist of 2 parts:
      1.1) sell a call option, and
      1.2) go long the stock
  2) The option position is normally kept till expiration (but a possible early assignment is OK with this system)
  3) Entry-level hedging for sys14:
      3.1) if stockprice drops below the initial entry price then close the stock position immediately
      3.2) if stockprice crosses over from below the initial entry price then re-open the stock position immediately
      In practice one would use two bands (for example +10 cents and -10 cents) around the entry price to avoid too many hedging trades.
      (FYI: the hedging mechanism for sys15 is a little bit complicated and tricky; in the next version it will be documented)


Example: assuming InitialStockPrice=100, HistoricalStockVolatility=40%, using monthly options (ie. Expiration=21 business days)
  Selling 1 Call:
    Spot=100.00 Strike=100.00 ExpDays=21 HoldDays=21 EarningsYield=0.00% DividendYield=0.00% StockVolatility=40.00% --> Call=4.60 Put=4.60

  Going long 100 shares of the stock:
    Spot=$100.00 --> CapitalNeeded=$10,000

  At expiration date:
    Regardless what the CurrentStockPrice or the CurrentVolatility is: we will keep the credit fully.
    The stock position serves us only to hedge our option position; it is not intended for making additional profits.

  Profit:
    We use the usual 2:1 overnight margin of the broker. So we have a leverage factor of 2.
    Meaning: of the $10,000 only half of it minus credit / 2 is our own investment (this is the basis for the PnL calcs).
    CreditReceived = $4.60  * 100                = $460
    StockPos      = $100.00 * 100                = $10,000
    UserPart      = $10,000 / 2 - $460 / 2        = $4770  (this is the basis for the PnL calcs)
    MonthlyPnL    = $460 / $4770 * 100            = 9.64%
    AnnualPnL      = ((1 + 9.64/100)^12 - 1) * 100 = 201.73%
    From these numbers the commissions paid and the interest for the margin has to be subtracted.


Remarks:
  - It's up to you to apply this system in the market(s).
  - To get the hedging correct, one would need to monitor and if necessary trade the stock nearly 24/7 by
    using multiple exchanges around the globe. Ie. by this, one has to eliminate any overnight gaps in the stock price.
  - If applied correctly then the given guarantee holds, ie. in this example 201% profit per year.
  - Using more volatile stocks and/or a shorter timeframe than the above used 1 month will give even more profit.
  - Regarding margin: you have to do the math to get the 2:1 margin. Ie. in this case you would initially
    keep only $5000-$460/2=$4770 plus commission in your account. The broker grants you 2:1 overnight margin (or 4:1 intraday margin).
  - The system is freely scalable to any investment amount. But the stock position should not be too big
    because it must be easily closable and re-openable; I would say the stock position should not be more than $50k.
  - For big money one would use multiples of such constructs, but then one should of course use different stocks.




The following extension(s) are optional:

Extension #1: Profit booster: How to make more than 8000% per year with this system:
  The smaller your own part of the invested total money is, the more the profit% will make up:
  Example:
    - let's say your own money is $1000
    - borrow the rest ($3770) cheaply from friends or take a 1 month loan
    - let's assume you have to pay 1% interest for the 1 month loan, ie. $37.70
    Now, your basis for the PnL calcs is your own $1000 plus the interest for the loan = $1037.70:
      MonthlyPnL = 460 / 1037.70 * 100              = 44.3288%
      AnnualPnL  = ((1 + 44.3288/100)^12 - 1) * 100 = 8070.26%
    Since compounding gets used, each month the above absolute numbers would of course change,
    but the relations (ie. the percentages) would stay the same.
