Day Trading Rules (Clarification)

The rules with regards to the day trading minimum of $25,000 leaves a little room for interpretation. I would like to fully understand how exactly this works.

If you buy a stock and sell that same stock on the same business day, this is classified as day trading. You can get away with buying it once more (1 buy, 1 sell and 1 buy) of the same stock. But if you do this more then once every 5 business days you will be required to have $25,000 in your brokerage account.

My Questions: :smart:

1. Is it $25,000 minimum at all times in addition to what you invest? Or can I invest $10,000 out of $25,000 leaving $15,000 in my account until the end of the day. If I make a small profit that day by investing my $10,000, and by closing my account is restored to $25,000 + my profit has this requirement been satisfied? May I trade at will so long as I have a $25,000 minimum either at the end of the day or at the beginning of the next? How is this measured and are there different rules for different brokerages?

2. Is there a limit to how much money I can day trade with? Is anything frowned upon? Lets say I trade with $10,000 on a single stock 2 times a day 5 days a week? Is this an issue with anyone? Say I do it with $15,000? $20,000? Is there a limit before it becomes a problem?

3. Are day traders in general looked down upon by brokerages? Are some brokerages more tolerant then others?

4. Once you are assigned the label of a day trader can you restore your account to normal non-day trading one without this $25,000 minimum imposed upon it?

Thank you for your time.

What Is The Recent Move In Gold Telling Us?

Gold has been one of the best performing assets in 2016. The price of gold has surged from $1061.00 to $1250.00 since the start of the year. Generally, most traders and investors will look for gold to do poorly when the U.S. Dollar is strong, but recently gold has rallied higher despite the strength in the dollar.

Gold topped out in September 2011 at 1923.70 an ounce. Ironically, gold peaked the week after J.P. Morgan Chase upgraded the equity to $2500.00 an ounce. It is still amazing how these giant financial firms can still upgrade an equity at parabolic highs. As you all know, gold has declined steadily since the 2011 top. The precious metal has given back roughly 50 percent of its gain from the 1999 low to the 2011 peak.

What is causing gold to rally in 2016? Over the past few years most central banks around the world have followed the Federal Reserve in creating easy money policies. Recently, the People's Bank of China, the Bank of Japan, and the European Central Bank have all began new forms of easy monetary policy. Japan and Europe have now moved to negative interest rates and this is something new that many investors are trying to understand and figure out. Hoarding money is very likely since many people will have to pay the bank to hold their money. In fact, Japan is seeing a surge in the purchases of safes. People are simply going to keep their money at home instead of depositing it with the banks. Many people will also rather have precious metals instead of holding lots of paper capital. These are just a few reasons why gold is trading at a high for 2016.

The current pattern on the daily chart of gold is neutral. This is because the precious metal have risen so much recently. At this time, gold looks to be trading sideways on a weekly chart. This sideways consolidation pattern could lead to another break-out down the road. In fact, most of the recent sell offs in gold have resulted in reversal moves right back up to the highs. This is bullish action overall since the equity cannot pullback from its overbought condition. The price action in gold is telling us that there is something bigger going on globally regarding the financial system. Traders and investors should continue to keep a close eye on gold as an important asset class in 2016. Some ways to trade gold are by using the SPDR Gold Trust (ETF)(NYSEARCA:GLD), iShares Gold Trust(ETF)(NYSEARCA:IAU) and the Market Vectors Gold Miners ETF(NYSEARCA:GDX).

The oil prices are still moving the market sentiment

The greenback could be boosted by US Q4 upward revision to 1% growth annually from only 0.7% preliminary reading, after growth by 2% in Q3 following expansion by 3.9% in the second quarter of last year.
The economic expansion deceleration to 1% in Q4 of last year could only lower the worries about the US economy but it cannot eliminate the fear of watching economic shrinking in the first quarter of this year which is depressed by harsh winter again could previously cause contraction in the first quarter of 2014 and 2015.
The comments which came out from the Fed's officials are all referring to adopting waiting and see stance for assessing the global economic slowdown and the financial development implications on the US economy.
While the inflation outlook in US is still sized by lower global economic expansion and lower oil prices preventing the Fed to be in rush for raising the interest rate to contain inflation upside risks.
In the same time, the US economy is still looking in need to the current Fed's accommodative stance at this level, after GDP annualized deceleration in the recent 3 quarters and manufacturing performance contraction in the recent 3 months because of the rising odds of raising the interest rate which supported the greenback from another side.
While the downside risks are mounting this quarter by continued economic deceleration in China and higher concerns about the financial situation of the banking sector amid the lower commodities and energy prices which caused depression in the mining sector.
Baker Hughes weekly report came by the end of last week to say that US Oil Rigs have fallen to only 400 which are less than third the working rigs number a year ago.
The report could tackle the oil prices progress by the end of last week weighing down on the risk appetite, as it could highlight the current lower need for digging for oil.

Last Friday Brent Apr. 16 could surpass its previous resistance at $36.75 which capped its rebound on last Jan. 28 but it came under pressure, after reaching $36.98 to go down for trading near $35.40 in the beginning hours of this new week.
Brent Apr. 16 daily RSI (14) is still in the neutral region reading 55.083 and also its daily Stochastic Oscillator (5, 3, 3) which is more sensitive to the volatility is still having its main line in neutral area reading 67.222 and also its signal line which is reading now 62.793.
Brent Apr. 16 daily MACD (12, 26, 9) which is less sensitive to the volatility could have its main line above the zero line at 0.324, while its signal line is still in the negative region reading -0.016 now.
Brent Apr. 16 daily Parabolic SAR (step 0.02, maximum 0.2) is reading now $30.84 in its eighth day of being below the trading rate which is still above its daily SMA20 and daily SMA50.

Important levels: Daily SMA20 @ $33.56, Daily SMA50 @ $33.68, Daily SMA100 @ $39.63 and Daily SMA200 @ $47.24

spreadbetting- trading on signals only ( beginner)

greetings all-:)

does anyone trades on signals provided by your platform only, and was succesfull? i am learning so its very difficult to take aplunge by myself and make decision but so far ( few days) i have not lost. is this always the case? is there any good source you can buy signals while you learning until you "master" your own analysis?

thanks-:)

spreadbetting- trading on signals only ( beginner)

For beginners (and those not so new)

In my own training, I read hundreds of books, literally speaking. But there's one book or work which stands out, and which every now and then I read or play in my computer:
Mark Douglas "How To Think Like a Professional Trader"
http://ift.tt/1TfnW09
Scroll down, the 2nd form the bottom.
Available pirated from various places. Outstanding. Better than any of his books.
The first time I played this course I was flabbergasted! It was more than 5 years ago I think. I'm not so sure. I literally transcribed the whole thing an still have it in a pdf file if anyone wishes to have it, I'm happy to distribute.
When I started trading in December 1999 I went straight to a "Market Wizard" featured in Schwager's 2nd book, who turned out to be a "lizard", a "Snake Oil salesman". A few years latter I discovered Mark Douglas. RIP Mark - you were a great human being and so many thanks for your work!

FxBears - Daily Diary Novice to ....

Hi Please Note that I am NOT an Expert
I am sincerly wishing to create an online record for my own personal growth in how to Trade Correctly first and foremost and see if my personally observations are sound.
Please Do NOT use my charts as Signals to Trade they are NOT Suggestions to trade.

Hi Everyone
Trading is a MineField... Correction My Choices and Actions are the Mind Field
2008 introduction to working for a ShareDealing Bank placing trades for people.
Placing trades for one client only on ETF's started an account with £1 million
after 3 years he had increased this to £3.5 Million

All this was trading ETFs only I asked him if he didn't mind telling me how he decided when to buy and sell
Buy the Troughs
Sell the Peaks
was his reply. Quite simple hey well that was my introduction to trading and my Grandfather had bought Value company's stocks Marks and Spencers etc and over a period of time those grew to £90,000+
So began my desire to Learn and Succeed.....

I Learned very slowly that your money can dissipate quickly and it seems whilst writing this that for me there is a correlation between not respecting the money I have and the amount of trades to the speed of giving that money away to the market.

2016 8 years on and financially flat at the moment but with the desire to succeed in respect for my Grandfather to make back the £14,000 he gave me in his will. I didn't gamble the money just incase that's what your thinking, I bought course after course business opp after business opp and learned as much as possible and then traded and traded and traded too much. Risk vs Reward even though I knew about the concepts and chart patterns i did not apply them focusing on the trying to make money aspect instead of trading strategically.

So today I'll start buy mapping out a daily log following currencies stocks and definitely ETF's and do daily reports just to log my understanding or lack there of.

So hopefully in another 8 years I can lookback on this post and my Grandfather will look down from heaven with a smile.

Kind Regards

Rich

Best way to short the markets in the longterm?

Hi there,
This has been on my mind for ages, and I keep running into brick walls with it.
I'd like to be short some markets on a longterm basis, and was bearish from about 6 months ago. The problem is, other than holding a futures contract short, or spreadbetting position short, there doesn't really seem to be any way of shorting the markets beyond these rather simplistic systems?

Have dabbled in options, and know that I can buy a put, but that this is subject to time decay and not an effective long term option. Have also looked at inverse etfs and these also do not look suitable as they mostly just last for a day, and the longest last for just a month.

Does anyone know of an investment vehicle where you can short the market long term?

Thanks,
Bootsyjam

Anyone knows how to link 2 charts under the same window in Interactive brokers?

Hi,

It might be a basic doubt, but I cannot find the way to do it.

Basically, I've just opened an IB window with a chart and from there, I've clicked on "File->Add chart to window". You can enter the same stock in the new chart, so that you can see 2 different timeframes simultaneously, however, if you then go to the top-left hand side and change the ticker, the update just applies to one of the charts, not to both.

Is there a way to link both charts under that same window so that when we change the stock in this window, both charts get updated simultaneously?

Thanks!!

Hi, I've been trying the das pro platform with suretrader and speedtrader demo accounts. However, I want more time to practice. I was informed that one way to continue the demo on a trail basis is to change your IP address. Is anyone familiar with how to do this? or can direct me to a thread regarding this?

I'm not cheap, I just dont want to pay for a demo when theres other options. And I'd rather save the money for trading.

Thanks in advance if you can help!

Any other broker than ETX Capital to have thousands of CFDs?

Hi Guys, quite new here, would like to ask you for advice about finding any other broker than ETX Capital that has so huge offering of CFDs. In some review Ive read they have like 6000+ CFDs which is exactly what I do as I sometimes try to arbitrage those hand picked stocks vs index, mostly in smaller countries, like hungary, poland etc.. ETX is quite good for it but it would be better to have more of brokers with such huge offering as ETX Capital do. Do you know about any? What do you think of them? Are they trustworthy? So far I have just few quids on them so should be safe, but dont know if I can go bigger there and feel safe..

Question about Forex Trading Journals

In some of the most viewed trading journals, people post graphs after the fact with a lot of colored squiggly lines. I am assuming that the dotted and squiggly lines are indicators although they are not labelled. There is no real mention of an entry or an exit. There is also no mention of the lot size. I have tried asking questions to the thread starters for some explanations, but to no avail. They tell you to read the entire thread. One should not have to read the entire thread to understand a post. People always attack you if you question their methods.

Could somebody explain those charts and graphs to me?

Phenomenon of CMG and JNJ

Hey, guys! I need your opinions on following topic. I have been tracking news on two stocks which are in my portfolio: Chipotle (NYSE:CMG) and Johnson & Johnson (NYSE:JNJ) (http://ift.tt/1pcjNNF;).

When e-coli outbreak was revealed at 20 Oct in Chipotle restaurants chain its shares immediately plunged more than 8% and had a deep consequences which led stock down more than 40%. Now we have almost the same situation with Johnson & Johnson, when appeared that regular use of its Baby Powder leads to ovarian cancer (http://ift.tt/1pcjLFC;).

This Monday Court ordered Johnson & Johnson to pay $72 million in damages to the family of a victim. Notwithstanding above facts shares of Johnson & Johnson still be growing.

What is the difference of these two cases?

FCA Regulation Requirements - Foreign Investors

The FCA is a minefield of information, can someone please help me with the following:

A UK company accepts money from investors outside the EU; no advice is given to the investors.

The money is invested in the purchase and renovation of UK residential property.

The property is sold and the profits (if any) are given to the investors.

Can someone please help me and advise me as to whether the company has to be regulated by the FCA?

Thank you in advance.

Taking trading to another level.

There are a mountain of strategies that use candle patterns, in addition to other criteria, that form a trigger for a trade. Indicators require a peg relative to properties that differ based on the time frame being used. I haven't used indicators for so many years now that I am not even sure when I last touched one.

Last year I stopped used all drawing tools which seemed to open new trading opportunities for me. Furthermore, since October last year, I have simplified it even more and pay no attention the parameters that defines an entry signal - again I am finding new opportunities that previously didn't exist!

Perhaps it's just all the time I have put into this business over the years and I have opened a new chapter in my ability. Perhaps the ability was there all along and It just took changes to expose it. This is all assumptions of course yet I am interested in understanding it more.

I typically trade longer term (daily, weekly) on one account and 4 and 1 hour time frames on another. My methods never seemed to be too consistent below these and perhaps I never really gave them enough time. I have however explored these more recently and the 5 minute has been extremely good.

A little background in case you are wondering. This isn't a situation of me being profitable for the first time. I have been profitable for years. It's a case of something has changed and I am more profitable than ever before.

So to cut long story short. I would like to know from other traders that's been profitable and went through a similar transformation at some point where their trading has been on a higher lever ever since. I would also like to hear from those where it was more of a honeymoon period and had to backtrack to where they were before.

Other opinions welcome also.

Taking trading to another level.

Newbie question!

Hi Guys,

I have a really, really newbie question here as I am just starting my journey into trading and have decided to look at Forex first. At present I am just doing my research.

I am looking at taking a course, do people recommend doing these? Or ultimately are they a waste of time?

If I start with a trading fund of £1000.00 is it possible to trade at a £1 a pip?

Cheers.

How do you define scalping

I just did my first 2 spreadbets today - I want to make sure I play fair.

I made 150 quid shorting oil and sp500 between 17.18 and 17.26
Would this be regarded as scalping by the spreadbetting company - I obviously was right in the swing and entry and exit were perfect, so from my point of view, i had to exit. I just want to ask you guys if you think this is ok. Last thing I want is to be told off by broker for only being in the trade for 8 minutes.

Cheers.

also:

1) 10% or more profit per year

But just in case someone is out there, and they meet the aforementioned criteria, for either becoming a trader or providing the algorithm, my client will assess the facts and get back with a proposal.

if it's a different market you are successuful at, apart from FX and commodities, he might be interested also. Please be specific and highly descriptive in stating your trading skills and experience as he will ask me many questions about you.

Thoughts about Brexit

I was very surprised when I didn't find threads Brexit at the forum. Today it becomes one of the most discussed question in geopolitical and financial world. Currently UK is reconsidering its terms of EU membership and the key points for Brexit are banking freedom and extremely big flow of immigrants from less developed countries.
UK want to have more rights in banking sphere to reduce the probability of second wave of financial crisis. Here is a good article on this topic.
Only rumors on possible Brexit make pounds at 7 years low also have weakened FTSE index.
As for me, I'm permanently surfing news on this topic and want to hear your opinions on pros and cons of Brexit for UK and EU.

Bought deals

If a company sells new shares at a price lower than the current price then the stock price will naturally go lower. What I don't understand is so long as the new shares are sold then eventually the lower prices will eventually go back to their original price so long as market conditions hsving changed. And it therefore offers a buying opportunity at its new price?

How do you handle a spike?

Had a nice little short going, riding it down for a few days and manually bringing down the SL. Then bam. Get shafted.

Does anyone not use SL because of this? Maybe use "mental" stops? Or smaller position size?

I am a newbie - but this is not the first time it's happened to me...

as it happend.

Shorted on the 19th @ 6208
by the 25th had a SL of 5950 (this morning)

Of course, had I not sold, would have been sitting in a decent profit...

Main advantages of Forex trading for beginners with Capital1Forex

Accessibility

You can start trading Forex with a relatively small amount of capital and this is truly one of the main benefits of Forex. While you may be required to deposit around $10,000 to start trading stocks, you can easily start trading currencies with a deposit of $100. For small size traders this is one of the most important benefits of Forex.

Liquidity

Forex is the most liquid market in the World. Why is that? Because there is a constant supply and demand for money. One of the benefits of Forex trading is that the market is open 24/5. This means that you do not have to adjust your schedule for the market opening hours, as you can trade all day long. In normal market conditions you can trade out of your positions with ease, as there is a near constant supply and demand in the Forex market.

Technological development

Software advancement is definitely one of the most important benefits of Forex trading. While most futures, stock and option brokers supply you with platforms that were developed years ago, Forex brokers provide the newest trading platforms. On top of this, there is also a great amount of third party software suppliers that provide useful trading extensions.

Admiral Markets supplies you with the market leading Forex trading platforms - MetaTrader 4 and MetaTrader 5. These platforms come as desktop programs for your PC and are also available for Android and iOS devices. As a special advantage, Admiral Markets lets you natively install MetaTrader 4 for your Mac OS.

Short trades

While the above mentioned Forex advantages are quite important, selling currencies without acquiring them first is one of the main benefits of Forex trading. The main trading philosophy is to buy low and sell high, but with Forex you can also sell high and buy low. This way you can potentially make profits on both downward and upward trends.

Leverage

When it comes to trading, the rule of thumb is - the bigger your capital, the larger your trade size. Leverage is an important weapon in the armory of Forex benefits. When employing that leverage, a trader can buy or sell up to 500 times more funds than he actually has. This way one can easily generate more substantial gains (or losses) even without having a large capital at your disposal.

Free Demo Account

Unlike many other providers of financial services, Forex brokers let you preview their services and test your trading knowledge on a practice account. This way you can trade paper money while experiencing real market conditions. What is best is that there are no restrictions applicable for this account, you can trade for as long as you need.

What is your set-up?

Would you mind posting a screenshot of your setup (feel free to blur out anything personal) and/or listing what software/data feeds/brokerage account you use when trading (basically anything you use for information/execution in deciding how you trade)? I'm especially interested in retail traders that do this full time.

I am curious about how you guys interact with others, as in what chat/communication systems you use, and if you are using any external news feed (even if it is as simple as having CNBC on the background).

If you can also post your total costs that would be helpful, as well as where you think your setup can most be improved.

Thank you.

From the other side, Iran’s oil minister Bijan Namdar Zanganeh said that It’s “ridiculous” for Saudi Arabia to propose that other nations will freeze production, after the kingdom has already increased its output to be more than 10m barrels a day, while Iran is planning to raise its daily production by one million in the coming months, after lifting the sanctions on it.
It looks that there can be no breakthrough of this crisis with no Iranian Saudi deal because of the existing tension between these 2 countries.

Brief Question about Broker Statements

Is there a brokerage that issues a statement illustrating your profit and loss on different positions ?

In other words, I would like to have a statement that would illustrate my profit on 100 shares of X and it would be in green for a profit and red for a loss based on the purchase price.

And an option would be illustrated as being in the money and potential profit and loss if I was to sell it at the current price.

And it would be updated instantaneously or every 5 minutes etc..

I don't recall ever seeing one like that.

Brief Question about Broker Statements

$SPY/S&P Chart Gap Fill...

The $SPY is kissing the gap fill on the charts from Friday.

Also the volume is light today for a sell off.

These simple factors tell me that upside is still likely in the next week. Not to mention there is a fair amount of bearish sentiment out there which makes me think the markets will go in the opposite direction of the public as it always does. ;)

Either way, I am going to trade this for a short term bounce then a hard sell off.

happy trading everyone!

WARNING: 90% Of Retail Traders Lose, What Are You Made Of? Are You A Shark?

The truth is that 90% of retail traders lose money and only 10% of traders make a profit and see any green. So statistically from a narrow and negative point of view your chances of success are slim at best.

But as with most things in life with a different and more positive perspective towards the task of creating wealth through online trading it’s entirely achievable.

Firstly why is it that you wish to trade and obtain money? This question is key as it will affect the core of your entire being. What separates winners from losers is often intent. Intent will give you the energy to persevere and learn from your mistakes rather than feel sorry for yourself.

Once you have clarity and believe in your purpose the rest is plain sailing. The majority of people in life say they want to win but have no real intent on making success happen. These kind of people secretly deep down just wish to please their family and friends and have to no real desire and ambition to succeed, they like to follow the herd instead of thinking of their own happiness and desires. They will never walk with the gods.

An open mind filled with positive intent will learn much faster than a closed mind expecting a negative outcome. We are not all born equal and the same can be said of the desire to win.

Listen and have believe in yourself and you will be in that 10% bracket making a profit. Ask yourself if you really want it, I mean really want it, if not walk away and stop filling your head with daydreams.

Money comes from success to those who deserve it, which means you have to work for it. You should understand that success boosts self esteem and confidence not money. Money is simply the reward we get for our efforts.
Money does not buy that house, car or designer wardroom it’s success that does. Think about it? Success equals money not the other way around.

Most traders fail as they take far too much risk as they never think to consider this and make decisions based purely on the desire for money becoming gamblers rather than traders.

Desire the trappings of success and the great life success can bring and detach yourself from money. To survive in a game that’s all about the money it’s a good idea not too worship it too much.

Basic Info About Trading In An ISA

Hi Everyone,

At this time, I don't have an ISA for the current financial year, and I'd like some basic information about a trading ISA, please. I've seen some good starting information on the Money Saving Expert website (trading ISA link), but I have a few more questions:

* am I right in thinking that the way it works is that you put a few thousand pounds into an ISA trading account, and then you get a web screen that allows you to buy and sell shares?

* do UK ISAs allow purchase of ETFs (British and foreign), and foreign shares?

Thanks for any advice or links for further information!

Trader performance research

Those who go back a ways on T2W may recall that back in 2012 I stared a PhD. Well, I'm finally done!

Just about 2 weeks ago I got the official word from the University of Exeter that the long journey has ended. You may now all call me Dr. Forman.

As I've mentioned before, my research has been into trader performance. The data is specifically from the forex market, but the broad ideas are cross-market compatible. For those who feel bizarrely compelled to read academic research, you can download a copy of my dissertation here.

Here's the abstract:

Overconfidence and its relationship to investor market participation is well established in the finance literature. The research into investors and social networks is only in its infancy, however. This thesis extends the literature by expanding on both subjects individually, then bringing them together.

Empirical work on individual investors in the existing literature links overconfidence and excess trading, resulting in impaired returns. The preferred activity metric, monthly account turnover, encapsulates two separate elements, though. One is trade frequency. The other is leverage use. Chapter 4 of this thesis theorizes based on the existing literature that in fact trade frequency is not a good measure of overconfidence. It then demonstrates through empirical analysis of a group of individual non-professional foreign exchange traders that leverage is much more suitable to that role.

Chapter 5 turns the focus to social networks, particularly with respect to information transfer. The literature in finance anticipates that network members benefit from their membership. Further, network position (social capital) enhances that benefit. This thesis challenges that expectation with respect to non-professional investors. Findings based on analysis of members of an online retail foreign exchange trader social network indicate that while there may be an educational benefit accruing to unsophisticated members, for more sophisticated ones membership appears to have a negative effect on returns.

One potential explanation for the negative impact of network membership is explored in Chapter 6 in the form of impression management. It is hypothesized that sophisticated investors are influenced in their behaviour by the realization they are being observed, and also the size of their audience. Analysis of foreign exchange traders indicates an increase in leverage use among sophisticated investors as their audience size increases, coinciding with a decline in trade excess returns, making the case for an observation-based rise in overconfidence.

Questions that are rarely asked about support and resistance

Like most, I've had good and bad trading days. I try to trade at support and resistance, but It can get confusing. I'll buy at support and the price goes up a bit only to fall and break the support level. Then I realize that the market was in a downtrend (or a ma crossover happened) before it reached that support level. Do trendlines or moving average crossovers out weigh support and resistance

Crossroad in life, please help

Hello everyone :)

Today I would like to ask a question that is keeping me from many things and is eating me alive. I decided to ask here because many people are full time traders and that is my goal also, and I really hope I will get some good suggestions to help me ease my mind with the question.

So basically... I am 22 years old and I feel that I should already have 1 think to be focused on and working on so that I can make something with my life. I currently have a full time job and quite a lot of free time. I am very motivated and I have much higher goals and ambitions as majority of people around me. They are pretty much happy with their paycheck once a month wich is very low by the way. But I really cant imagine myself going on like that for few more years because it is killing me not doing anything beside the job.

I offer my services, have few websites up and running, but I make VERY little extra per month. Now I think it is really the time for me to step up the game and start working on something that will actually get me somewhere. I will try to be as direct as I can. Basically at the moment I am thinking of a few routes:
1. Trading (forex, stocks..)
2. Programming (web like PHP)
3. Starting a local web shop (currently selling on local "ebay" and I quite like it)

So those 3 are basically what I am thinking of right now. Of course I also like gaming and was thinking of starting a YT channel, and many other things. And so...my frustration right now is not knowing what to pick and work on. Because if I do something like I did untill now, not really dedicate to it, it doesnt get far.

Now I would really like to hear what you all think about and would really please for some opinion that I can plan off of. :)

I hope I posted in the correct section, as this is also connected to trading in a way, if Im wrong please move thread.

Thanks for taking your time to read all that.

Spread Betting firm – No Trading desk best

All,

My goal:
Open a spread betting account

My trading style:
I mostly trade swing over a few days but if I can make a few quid on the day, I’ll jump in occasionally.
I am not interested in scalping/high frequency/automated/10 pips
Leverage: Initially 1:1 - until I get comfy with the system

What I’m looking for:
I have been looking into this spread betting business and I need to clarify a couple of points.
From what I have read, there seems to be 2 types of spread betting firms:
1 – The Market maker type that have a trading desk
My understanding is that I am trading against the house in this case, conflict of interest in that way makes my uncomfortable
2 – No trading desk
Trades are executed, no questions asked, no slippage, what you see is what you get – I have also read that they don’t care if you win or lose, they edge every position and you are not trading against them.

Questions:
A - Do point 1 and 2 above sum it up? Please explain if there is more to it
B - Are prices/index quoted by SB firms real prices or are they made up?

Many thanks in advance. :)

Interview on Binary Options

Hello everyone,

my name is Lorenzo D'Agostino and I'm a freelance journalist. I am currently working on a story about binary options, and I am looking for experienced traders based in London to interview on this topic.

The interview doesn't necessarily need to be on the record, as I'm interested in getting as much background information as I can about binary trading. In particular, I'm struggling to understand to what extent binary options are a legitimate financial tool rather then an amateurish form of trading, and whether it's possible or not to make a living out of it.

If any of the readers of this forum is in London and is willing to give me some of his time to discuss the issue, I can be contacted at this address.

I very much appreciate your help.

SLA approach for NIFTY50 Index

Very recently, I have come across your thread---"If you can draw a straight line" by dbphoenix. He has written very well and to the point without any distraction on the matter.

I have been fascinated by SLA approach after reading dbphoenix thread. Since I do trading mostly on Nifty50 index and worthwhile to apply SLA concept hereon.

Let me start with monthly chart of Nifty50
Click the image to open in full size.

If we look at the monthly chart of Nifty from 2009 —its in nice uptrend and periodically undergone correction, though from April 2014 its undergoing severe correction from 9170 level.

Weekly: Wonderful LH and LL —continuously occurring in a channel

Daily: Downtrend - currently stays at SL of the channel line

Hourly: After making low of 6870, price is consolidating in the range of 7150-7250 (nothing but 50%(little above) retracement of recent fall). Since Nifty50 consolidating for last three days, not able to guess which direction it could head further on… though based on today closing, I could speculate that the trend line is broken on hourly--it may head lower ....

As I am new to this SLA approach, suggestion and advice are welcome for the better understanding.

How to Profit from the EU Referendum?

I imagine that the big players will be backing their judgment and building substantial positions in preparation for the forthcoming referendum. If they're right, they'll make some serious coin. In the lead up to the referendum, my guess is that the markets will become increasingly volatile and, immediately after it when the result is known, there could be some large swings in the major FX pairs and equity indices. So, whatever your view - in or out - if you wanted to take a punt and back your judgement - how would you go about it?

I'm undecided about which way I'll vote, but I suspect that Dave C' and the 'stay in' crowd will win the day. Based on that, what instrument should I buy (or sell) to get the biggest bang for my buck - and why?

Discuss!

London Mayor Boris Johnson who is expected to succeed David Cameron by 2020 elections announced his decision during the weekend to go along with UK Justice Secretary Michael Gove for campaigning against Cameron's deal preferring Brexit.
The conservative ruling party seems ahead of critical times, despite David Cameron's efforts which ended last Friday to a deal to have special British characteristic in EU freeing the union membership from most of the contents the other EU countries follow to keep UK in EU but that's looking not enough even for the ruling party itself!
So, what about the labor opposing party?
It looks that there can be political instability next in UK with more surprises ahead till the referendum date which will be waited to end this uncertainty.

Economic Review & Weekly Outlook

Equities posted their strongest weekly gain in 2016, with tech stocks and financials leading the way. This came in spite of the continued weakness observed in the energy complex, with WTI and Brent crude futures both being weighed upon by the continued glut in supplies and the lack of a coherent solution from OPEC to address the price slide.

Furthermore, a build in DoE inventories put further pressure on prices as the week drew to a close. Of note, OPEC and non OPEC nations indicated a willingness to freeze in production this week, however, it has not had the bullish affect that some have hoped for. The
DJIA finished down 0.13% at 16391.43, S&P 500 finished flat at 1917.76 and the NASDAQ-100 finished up 0.30% at 4164.09.

A surprise uptick in inflation caught some off-guard today, with January’s core CPI growing at the fastest pace since August, consequently a bout of fast money selling occurred in treasuries, hitting the belly of
the curve. However, this move was quickly pared and major flattening bets were placed, as they have all week, across the curve but especially in the 2s/30s. At the pit close T-notes finished down half a tick at 130.29.

FX markets have been relatively quiet, however Cable has dominated market chatter on Brexit concerns
given the summit which is currently taking place in Brussels. GBP/USD was bid towards of the end of a session amid hopes of a deal being reached in spite of comments from French President Holland, who said a lot of countries do not currently accept the social welfare demands made by Britain.

Looking ahead, next week sees the release manufacturing and services PMIs from across the globe, German IFO and CPI data, US durable goods and secondary GDP reading and a host of Fed and ECB speakers

Preparing to Begin Trading

Hi,

I have been a lurker of this forum for some time absorbing information. I have decided to day trade, and have set myself a goal of a year to start actually trading with real money.

I have been stock/fund investing for over 10 years, and understand day trading is a lot different to actual investing (long term investing); I believe i do have a good understanding 'base' which i can develop.

Currently i am making it a daily routine to read the financial times; from which I've learned how specific news impacts certain shares/sectors. I keep track of news on my phone via news apps. I am also a avid reader of the Economist, and Moneyweek.

I have got my hands on a few day trading introduction books that I'm reading through.

So thats my introduction. :)

Migrants

What is Europe going to do with all these poor refugees and migrants ?

The thousands so far may well not be the end of a steady stream.

The Chief of security estimates there are at least 5.000 jihadis mixed in amongst them. The average European would not be able to spot them probably. So money has to be spent housing and feeding them.

I think it is essential that the European Govts. actively get them geared up to go home. The males 16 to 70 are trained up militarily to accomplish this. With discussion about democracy etc. The chances are they will turn to their persecutors if they are not channelled into something positive and cost twice as much in damage.

Feedback request: online tool for finding strategies

Hi,

we are working on this online tool http://ift.tt/1KwOBCu
It allows the user to find technical strategies on given dataset.
For that it uses GA and predefined simple price patterns.

Its unfinished, but still doing the job as you may see for yourself.

There is so far not much confirmation if people would really pay for such a tool (once it looks better and more useful). So i am starting to look into this direction.

I hope this may be a good place to find some feedback/opinion, especially:
  • Would you pay for such a service?
  • What killer features would you welcome?
  • How to make it for you more trustful ?

If you wanna use it watch first the video, the web is currently not too user-friendly.

Thx a lot.

heat map objective function?

I generate several Z heat maps (X,Y, Z=performance) by varying the X and Y functions. I want to pick the best X,Y functions based on the heat maps.

A heat map with a smoother surface is better than a rough one. Also, one that separates high performance from low performance is paramount.

Any ideas on how to algorithmicly use these two(or more) criteria to pick the "best" heat map?

Can anyone recommend a good stock screener for UK stocks?

Hi all, I am new to trading and I'm still only paper trading on US stocks. I have been using finviz.com and wondered if anyone could recommend an equivalent for UK stocks?
Cheers :)

The Fed Is Handcuffed & Markets Could Drop 30%

The Federal Reserve is potentially in big trouble after this mornings CPI (Consumer Price Index) Report. While the headline number came in at 0%, the core (minus food and energy) came in at 0.3%. This was slightly more inflation than expected and if we start seeing this trend continue, it kills any chance of negative interest rates as an option for the Federal Reserve. Negative interest rates was the last silver bullet the Federal Reserve had in its arsenal, after years of quantitative easing (printing money) and zero interest rate policy. Note: Japan has done it recently, so far without any benefit.

While the markets are not worried about it at this point (1 data point does not make a trend), it is likely any future inflation signals along with any weakening economic indicators will panic the market to the tune of a full 25-30% correction off of the all time highs on the S&P 500. My projections show one more short squeeze to the upside to around the 2,000 level on the S&P, followed by another bigger leg down to as long as 1,575.

Advice

Hello my name is Quan Fussell and I am an aspiring market analyst. I am reaching out to you because I feel like you have more qualifications to give me advice than the average Joe blow. I trade virtual stock with a return upward of 20% per month if I stay on it. People tell me this is good, but I am still seeking more advice to help me increase this number as well as make it consistent.

P.s don't over look me because of my age because I am only sixteen

Fades

Hello!
I'm relatively new to trading, and was wondering if anyone knew what a "fade" is? I'm currently reading some literature, and they keep referring to "fades". I'm slightly unfamiliar with them. Thanks in advance for the help.

Richard Wyckoff Course

For Sale:

The original Richard Wyckoff course in Stock Market Science and Technique from the Wyckoff Stock Market Institute.

It comes in 4 blue binders and currently costs $1200 from here...https://wyckoffstockmarketinstitute....o/brochure.htm

I bought it direct from the Wyckoff institute and think I paid $900 plus postage around 5 years ago.

HOWEVER...it has been kept in conditions that were not the best (an old caravan) and so some pages show signs of once being damp, but all appear to be ok and dry now. It looks complete but I can't offer any guarantees.

It must weigh around 5 kgs so postage will be around £50.

I'll sell it to the first who gives me £50 plus the £50 postage total £100.

PM me if you're interested.

Thanks,

Porks

New to investing - algo vs no algo

Hello!

I would like to become an algorithmic trader and start trading with my own account.
However, I am new to investing, so I believe it is better to begin investing without algorithms.
The main reason is that I believe one needs to have a substantial initial balance to trade algorithmically.

What's your opinion?

Also, trading 'by hand' will somehow change completely the type of strategy, that means I would look at fundamental analysis or some more traditional strategies.

Is that in any case a valuable experience to show to potential employers at quantitative hedge funds?

Help a Brother Out!

Hey everyone,

I have been a little quiet on here of late, I recently returned from a year studying abroad in South Korea, so trading has been on the back burner!

I'm back home now, but final year at uni has been hectic. That's why I'm here. It's easy to get responses from any Tom, Dick and Harry, but by asking on here I hope to get some professional and educated advise.

Basically I am writing a dissertation on Mobile Banking Apps and FinTech, it would be a massive help if you guys could complete this short survey. I promise it will take less than 2mins, it can be done on your phone or your computer. Any responses are greatly appreciated, thanks a lot guys!

Market Makers not quoting

All,

Something dreadful just happened, i was trading 2ukl, when I wanted to sell, I couldn't get a quote through my broker online, I called and explained the issue, price kept dropping and the guy at the end of the phone couldn't get a quote either.

He put me through to dealer who had to try a couple of times to get a quote and explained that the MM stopped quoting online for that etf!!!! He eventually managed to get a quote and sell for me. By then I had lost about £100.00 by the time I managed to eventually sell.

The trader explained that MM don't have to give quotes online if they don't want to. I have never had this happen to me and quite frankly, I can live with £100 loss, but it could be a lot worse for me or others who trade bigger.
Luckily I am trading thin at moment because of market uncertainty but if i was all in, this would have cost me a lot more.

Question, is that right that MM don't have to quote online? I just find it absurd. I asked the trader if they did that for the own financial profit, he said probably not. Only thing I can think of is MM mouse or keyboard stopped working!

I am quite sick really and put off trading now.

CFD's and company takeovers , help !!

hi all,
brand new to T2WIN , i have seen similar question to mine from 2013 but it is unanswered . I had a long postion in bwin.party who were taken over by GVC ,
the deal was approx 0.231 gvc shares + 25p for every bwin share.
On the last day bwin were traded , bwin closed at 124p & gvc approx 435p
I received an open position in GVC @ 428p , but no mention of any cash return. On querying this with my broker i got the answer below :

Broker :
124 (Bwin closing price) - 25 (cash offer) = 99
99 / 0.231 (GVC share ration) = 428.57 (opening level of GVC)

with the following quote :
" Due to this, when the GVC position was booked onto your account you will have immediately been running a profit."

My brokers seem to say i am not due any cash part for the deal .
i believe the calculation should have been ( for example of 20000 shares )
20000 x 25p= £5000 cash + ( 20000 x 0.23 = 4600 gvc shares ) open new position of 4600 GVC shares at 435p.

Q. Does this make sense ???? am i missing something . does a long cfd position not mirror & entitle the owner to all financial benefits as if they held the actual shares ?? as you can see it would be a big loss to me ..( 5k cash in exchange for a 7p better opening level in GVC ) . thanks in advance for any feedback .

Elder Impulse System - any experience?

Hi, I've recently started using Elder Impulse charts, after reading a post about them on tradersbulletin. Am using them on dailies at the moment, and having some success, but would really like to hear from anyone who's using these on shorter timeframes, and ideas to avoid getting into frequent 'duff' trades in sideways markets. Many thanks in advance ...

SB Brokers' honesty

All,

I’m UK based. I am considering spread betting, purely for tax purpose and trading ease (trading from a platform directly rather than brokers web browser.

One think I need to go passed, is ensuring that I am comfortable with various aspects of the SB broker that I choose, mainly ease of use, costs (being last on the list if all else is good) and platform ergonomics, but also honesty and etiquette. And this is where I stumble... Looking at reviews, it would appear that a lot or SB brokers lack transparency and honesty: platform going down, re-quotes, people having problem withdrawing funds, slippage...

I find it hard enough fighting the market, but if I have to fight the broker as well, I wonder how worth this whole business is. I currently swing trade mostly, but also day/scalp occasionally. I am not overly interested in the leverage side of SB. I am more on the cautious/conservative side and I don’t feel the need to put my hard earn cash "+" on the table to make big wins so perhaps SB is not for me. But as I said, costs seem to be less (Stamp Duty is a killer- CGT is a pain). :(

What are your thoughts?

Cheers. :)
