Several products commercially sold for pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). A "fairly common" rare, chronic and progressive disease. The patients need chronic medications for life. These patients live for years, there's no cure, and no definite causality other than genetics in select patients. That means, the prevalence of patients over time is likely to rise.
Most medications are infusions or frequent injections of medications intended to mitigate symptoms. $UTHR came out a few years ago with an oral formulation. These medications are highly reimbursable through various insurance payers. It's also not easy to switch from one drug in the same class to the other. Most of the time, when you're on a particular drug, it's for life.
Currently, one drug, Remodulin accounts for 39% of revenue which will come off patent in 2018. The idea is to grow the oral formulation's market share and create a permanent, implantable pump for which to instill Remdoulin. This pump had a minor setback recently, causing the stock to plummet. These setbacks are common with new technologies as the FDA is merely requiring more data. Current market share has not been impacted, only future market share may be delayed. In addition, a new cancer product has come online last year for neuroblastoma which will slowly gain a foothold as other options are limited. This drug improves event free survival and overall survival.
